Chapter Seventeen
Once they’d pulled into the parking lot of the local hospital, McKayla dug a comb out of her purse and handed it to him.
“My family will probably question it more if my hair is perfect than if it’s messy,” he argued, but he ran the comb through it anyway.
McKayla had dabbed on some blush and lipstick while he was driving, and since her hair was already short and choppy, she didn’t need to worry about it. She still couldn’t believe what they’d been about to do when he’d gotten the call. She chalked it up to temporary insanity and the need to feel comforted after Kent’s drive-by. Maybe fate had intervened and prevented them from making a terrible mistake. Although she would never wish ill upon Liam’s family. She thought highly of all of them and had been accepted as an honorary family member due to her sister’s relationship with Finn. She felt terrible about what had happened to Barb O’Brien.
As they rushed into the hospital, Liam said, “Just follow my lead about why we’re together.”
“Okay,” she said, knowing she could trust him.
After checking in at the front desk, they took the elevator to the surgical floor, where they joined Finn, Harper, Connor, Julia, and the patriarch of the family, Daniel O’Brien, in the waiting room.
“You’re here,” Finn said, patting Liam firmly on the back.
“Wouldn’t be anywhere else,” Liam said, nodding to the rest of his family members.
Harper stepped forward and gave McKayla a hug. “Didn’t expect to see you, sis.”
Clearing her throat, McKayla said, “I know. Liam and I—
“Were out to dinner when I got the call. It was a thank-you dinner for all the hard work she’s been doing at the office,” Liam said, loud enough for everyone to hear.
“Nice move, bro,” Connor said with a knowing look.
Julia smiled as she glanced from Liam to McKayla. “We’re just glad you’re here,” she said.
“Where’s Ava?” McKayla asked, partly to take the focus off her and Liam.
“We dropped her off at Cam’s on the way here,” Connor replied.
McKayla was impressed with how Connor and Julia had handled the situation with Ava and Cam. It couldn’t have been easy for Julia to accept that Cam had Connor’s baby, but she’d handled it with dignity and grace. Of course, Ava was a doll, so that had made things a little easier.
“How’s Mom?” Liam asked, directing the question to his dad.
“She’ll be fine,” Daniel replied. “Stubborn woman has been putting off hip replacement surgery for a while. She fell down the stairs when she was rushing to answer the phone, and that did it.”
Liam asked a few more questions about the surgery and recovery period, and then they all sat down to wait. So as not to draw any more attention to herself, McKayla sat next to Harper instead of Liam, but when they locked eyes across the room, he gave her a slight frown.
Ignoring him, she turned her attention to Harper and whispered, “Is Barb really going to be okay?”
Patting McKayla’s leg, she said, “Yes.
